On-the-job work experience is an important way young people get the skills they need to launch their careers. This summer, more students than ever before will have a job under the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) program in our community of Kanata-Carleton.

290 positions were approved in Kanata-Carleton this summer with an overall funding for youth in our community of $689,943.

Karen McCrimmon, Member of Parliament for Kanata-Carleton made the announcement today at Canada’s Centre of Excellence in Next Generation Networks (CENGN), a local not-for-profit company that received $19,000 in funding and created 5 new student jobs. CENGN, is a consortium of industry, academic and research leaders dedicated to accelerating the commercialization of next generation communications solutions.

More than 77,000 jobs are approved for funding under CSJ this year across Canada, more than double last year’s 34,000 and roughly 7,000 more than originally anticipated when the government announced a boost to the program funding in the federal budget earlier this year.

CSJ creates summer job opportunities and provides valuable work experience for youth aged 15 to 30 intending to return to their full-time studies in the next school year. The program also helps employers generate jobs that focus on priorities important to their local communities as well as on a number of national priorities that include, in 2016: the settlement of Syrian refugees, Indigenous people, small businesses and cultural and creative industries.

The Canada Summer Jobs Program is part of the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy to help young people gain the skills, abilities and work experience they need to find and maintain good employment.

“We set an ambitious goal to create up to 70,000 jobs for youth across Canada, and we’ve exceeded it. More young people than ever before will benefit from a job this summer through this program.”

– The Honourable MaryAnn Mihychuk, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour

“Providing funding for Kanata-Carleton businesses to boost youth employment in our community is an excellent way to grow our local economy and invest in the workforce of tomorrow. Making these important investments will continue to make our community stronger and more competitive in the work environment of today.”

– Karen McCrimmon, Member of Parliament for Kanata-Carleton

“Every year at CENGN we bring in approximately 40 of Canada’s most tech-savvy student interns in the fields of project management, marketing and engineering in the Digital ICT network space. Students are involved in various industry led projects and gain real world experience on cutting-edge technology. We also have a robust training program and last year we trained and certified 216 students in next generation networking technologies. CENGN strives to grow a talent pool that is second to none and can help drive the Canadian Digital Economy.”
