Mojatatu Networks Enables Analysis on Large Scale Kubernetes Deployments

Mojatatu Networks is an Ottawa based leader in Linux Native Software Defined Networking (SDN) and  a pioneer in the SDN world, having developed one of the earliest commercial SDN Network Operating Systems (NOS) deployed in big telecom infrastructure. Mojatatu’s MojaNET(tm) Network Application Platform is the only SDN solution based upon IETF SDN standards.

Mojatatu Networks is completing its first SDN CENGN project to test the company’s new MojaNET Analytics Infrastructure (MAI) module and demonstrate its performance and extreme scaling capabilities. MAI uses the MojaNET SDN component as infrastructure for deployment of large scale telemetry production and consumption.

Operators Gain Valuable Insight via the MojaNET Analytics Infrastructure (MAI)

MojaNET was designed to work well in a micro-service environment, allowing specialized extensions to be written as applications and auto-scaled based on policy and available resources.  MojaNET operators then have the ability to deploy new services and applications quickly and gain complete end-to-end control of their network.

MAI extends the MojaNET platform by providing ‘developer-less’ telemetry integration. Using MAI, it is possible to quickly and simply configure and deploy distributed collectors, which are specific to monitored resources, as well as their counter-part control layer consumers. Figure 1 shows a sample use case of a MAI deployment in a telco Evolved Packet Core (EPC) environment. In this setup, user equipment connects to the Radio Access Network

(RAN) and is bridged to the internet by the EPC. A typical setup like this often includes Performance Enhancement Proxies (PEP) to enhance user experience by bridging TCP between two congestion control domains in order to mitigate link-related degradations that would otherwise occur.

This PEP setup is deployed for Mojatatu’s validation project on the CENGN commercial grade infrastructure. The PEP environment runs on bare metal machines with light-weight containers, with the control path running over a kubernetes cloud environment.  The data and control path are connected using MojaNET on a vxlan fabric. Hundreds of millions of TCP flows, created at a rate of many thousands of flows/second and traversing through multiple PEPs, are used to test the scaling capabilities of both MojaNET and MAI.  MojaNET MAI sensors efficiently collect information on all flows at extremely high performance levels and deliver vast analytics related to those TCP flows to the user. In the cloud, the MAI analytics infrastructure scales up as the load increases and down when load decreases.

The CENGN deployment functions will illustrate an operating environment example of 5G and IoT deployments and demonstrate MojaNET’s ability to handle the massive scalability that 5G and IoT require. Leveraging MojaNET’s advanced features, Mojatatu Networks is developing a range of products that address requirements in Software Defined WANs (SD-WAN), Data Centers (SDDC), Storage (SDS), Broadband Network Gateways (BNG), Security Solutions, Load Balancing and Bandwidth Management.

Leveraging an SDN CENGN Project

The MojaNET Analytics Infrastructure (MAI) is one of the most advanced SDN telemetry products available, and CENGN is excited to provide our infrastructure services and technical expertise to help bring the product to the next level! Mojatatu Networks’ current focus is supporting the needs of its established clients while expanding its client base.  To demonstrate that MojaNET can achieve the high performance and scalability required in the IoT and 5G world, Mojatatu is using CENGN’s testbed to scale to many millions of connections within a Kubernetes environment.

The CENGN team is thrilled to provide a testing environment, validation, and the exposure that will result from this project.

Mojatatu Networks is a growing Canadian business that is using the services at CENGN through the Next Generation Network Program (NGNP). The NGNP is a Government of Ontario program offered through a partnership between CENGN and the Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) that is providing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across Ontario access to the CENGN Testbed. CENGN’s digital infrastructure is connecting SMEs like Mojatatu Networks to state-of-the-art equipment and network services, which will allow these companies to test and validate their solutions.
