Considerations for Scaling your Cloud Application – What we have learned from 150 Projects
CENGN, Canada’s Centre of Excellence in Next Generation Networks, operates a national testbed, specialized in advanced IoT, AI, and Cloud technology, to support the commercialization of tech products and solutions from start-ups and small business across Canada.
During this Lunch & Learn, the CENGN team will share its expertise and learnings in scale testing tech products for market growth, drawing from the organization’s experience helping over 150 companies on their path to commercialization. This activity will provide valuable insight for product developers as they architect, design, and take new products to market.

- Shawn Kahandaliyange – Director Solutions Engineering
- Shawn brings 20 years of experience in the technology sector, more than half of which has been with Canadian startups. Shawn blends a technical background with hands-on business experience, and has applied this mix in a diverse range of roles including corporate development, IP licensing, strategic partnerships, sales engineering, and business development.
- Alex Edwards – Business Engineering Manager
- Alex has been in the tech industry for 30 years and today contributes to the CENGN mission as a Business Engineering Manager supporting tech industry growth and startup success across Canada. His passion for this role is aided by a background in mathematics and computer science, product development, manufacturing, corporate strategy, and business development.
Shawn and Alex have a combined 40 years of experience in high tech and come to work every day looking forward to helping grow tech innovation in Canada.

How a uOttawa + Ciena Partnership is enabling innovation in 5G and Beyond
In 2019, uOttawa, a top 10 research intensive university in Canada, and Ciena, a leader in network innovation, established an important partnership to advance research into 5G Advanced and 6G technologies. Enabled by the Ontario Centers of Innovation (OCI) and the ENCQOR 5G program, the research and innovation efforts focused on 5G+ disruptive technologies.
This multi-year partnership combined the application of uOttawa’s extensive research capabilities in 5G infrastructure systems with the development of innovative digital technologies focused on Ciena’s self-optimizing fabric concept. This university + industry collaboration provided the opportunity for uOttawa students to gain training and access experiential learning. Overall, the partnership has been a win-win scenario for both uOttawa, Ciena and the fully engaged research students.
This moderated panel will provide an overview of the uOttawa + Ciena collaboration from the perspective of Ciena executives and the University of Ottawa team. In addition, the panel will explore why pushing the boundaries and definitions associated with 5G is critical for innovation and the journey forward to 6G.
