Twenty-four university students will show off their network management skills on Thursday, comping for prizes and potentially employment opportunities with companies such as Juniper Networks and Telus.

It’s part of a “hackathon” hosted by the Centre of Excellence in Next Generation Networks in Kanata, where students will be “challenged to create ‘fail safe’ networking solutions that ensure reliable application performance in the midst of unpredictable network conditions,” CENGN said in a release.

For tech companies, events like this have become an increasingly popular way to identify potential employment candidates and cultivate interest in a field where competition for talent can be tough.

Students from Carleton University, the University of Ottawa, McGill University, the University of Waterloo and École des Mines de Nantes in France will compete.
